Job (1 Opening): Safe Schools/Healthy Students Community/School Liaison

Federal Funding was awarded to Springfield City School for the next 2 years for the following Safe School/Healthy Student Plan (SSHSP).

 

Integrated, comprehensive, community wide, community-specific plan to address problems of school violence and alcohol and other drug abuse, focused on six elements:

1.      Safe school environment

2.      Alcohol and other drugs and violence prevention and early intervention programs.

3.      School and community mental health preventive and treatment intervention services.

4.      Early childhood psychosocial and emotional development programs.

5.      Supporting and connecting schools and communities.

6.      Safe school policies.

What is the Community/School Liaison Program and Position?

The Community/School Liaison Program will consist of ten (10) liaisons, each of which will be connected to an Elementary School.  The liaisons, will have a home-base office space at one of the NFMLF ministry sites.  The position will require a person who is community, student and family focused.  Networking and working with the community SSHSP partners is a priority.  This position requires at least two years experience in working with the school or community and an associate degree in education, social work or related field is preferred.

Organizational Relationship:     

Reports to Nehemiah Foundation, Ministry Leaders Forum (NFMLF) Supervisor

GENERAL JOB FUNCTION:

Provide a link between the schools, local agencies, students and their families as described in the elements of the SS/HS Grant.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

 

I.    Promote learning, safety and socially appropriate behaviors in the school setting.         

*      Link community support partners with schools.     

 

*      Link students with community and school-based after school programs.

 

*      Provide information to parents/guardians about SS/HS mentor program.

 

*      Receive ongoing positive behavior in-service training.

 

II.    Promote a healthy school environment.

 

*      Refer student and/or family concerns beyond daily clinic activity to the Certified School Nurse for consultation or intervention.

 

*      Address the issues, which result in chronic or prolonged absences from school.

 

*      Promote lifestyle choices that negatively impact current and long-term health such as obesity, smoking, use of drugs and alcohol, pregnancy  and other conditions related to early sexual activity, violence, etc.

 

*      Adhere to learned patterns of wellness.

 

*      Support during family or personal crisis.

 

*      Make available information and educational tools regarding health issues.

 

III.   Advocate as Community/School Liaison for students and families.

 

*      Link school and community services, including but not to the exclusion of others; Mental Health Services, Juvenile Justice Services, and Social Services that will benefit the safety and health of students and their families.

 

*      Expand family’s knowledge base of community resources and utilization of such resources.

 

*      Role Model appropriate communication skills to foster a family’s self-esteem and success in the school and community.

 

*      Teach, Council, and support students, teachers, and families individually and in groups.

 

*      Use a variety of culturally, linguistically, and educationally appropriate strategies in a variety of settings.

 

*      Collaborate with relevant community and school providers through cases review conferences as needed.

 

*      Maintain confidentiality.

 

IV.    Miscellaneous and Special Assignments

*      Attend staff meetings and serve on temporary committees as requested.

 

*      Prepare and maintain records and reports relevant to SS/HS goals and outcomes.

 

*      Maintain and increase knowledge and skills through attendance at meetings, conferences, training seminars, and in-service training.

 

*      Speak and make presentations for community groups as requested.

 

*      Perform additional duties and assignments as requested by the SS/HS Project Director.       

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A minimum of two (2) years experience in home visiting and/or community/school experience.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Associate Degree in Education, Social Work, or a related field.
